Building to Endure
Starting a company has never been easier. Building an enduring one has never been harder.
Today, software can be created almost instantly. AI can generate products in hours. Infrastructure is inexpensive. The mechanics of building have become dramatically easier.
Julia Austin captures the challenge perfectly in After the Idea:
“Building is not the hard part. What’s hard is building the right thing for the right people."
The best companies don't win because they produce code faster. They win because they develop a deeper understanding of the problems their customers actually have. Founders need to discover insights that others miss.
Teams are often too focused on building a big company before they know the right company to build. Learn before scaling. That takes relentless dedication to discovery. Build for durability rather than for the next financing. More often than not, if you solve an important customer problem, then the capital will follow.
From the beginning, test all your assumptions. We believe curiosity is one of a founder's greatest competitive advantages. The founders who ask better questions almost always build better companies. Curiosity leads to better customer conversations, better hiring, better products, and ultimately better businesses.
Founding a company isn't about proving you already have the answer. It's about discovering the right question. We encourage founders to immerse themselves in customer discovery before committing to a product strategy. Before producing code, spend time inside your customers' organizations. Understand how they work, how they make decisions, what frustrates them, and what they've already tried. The best founders often discover that the problem they set out to solve isn't quite the problem their customers actually need solved.
Move quickly, but don't rush.
There is an important difference.
Sometimes the best thing a founder can do is pause before building. Spend weeks talking to customers instead of polishing fundraising decks. But once customer understanding begins to emerge, we encourage rapid experimentation. Build prototypes. Throw away code. Learn from real users. Repeat. Most early software should be viewed as learning tools, not permanent assets.
Every company is different. Every founder learns differently. Every market evolves in unexpected ways. Rather than forcing every founder through the same milestones, we work alongside each team as thoughtful collaborators. Sometimes that means discussing product strategy. Sometimes it's hiring. Sometimes it's fundraising, founder dynamics, governance, or simply helping navigate the emotional highs and lows that accompany building something new.
Building a startup can be lonely so you need a tribe of creative problem solvers. Some of the best breakthroughs happen between founders facing similar challenges at similar moments. Other times a seemingly naive question can lead to a spark of insight. We seek to bring together exceptional people who are generous with their experience, candid about their struggles, and eager to help one another succeed. We believe the relationships formed often become as valuable as the capital itself. Years later, we hope these relationships continue to compound.
There is no shortage of capital in today's startup ecosystem. What remains scarce is patient attention from people who are devoted to your mission. Yes, we invest capital, but perhaps more importantly, we will work alongside you before the company becomes obvious. Together, we bring decades of experience as founders, operators, engineers, product builders, investors, and board members. We've made mistakes ourselves. We've watched hundreds of founders navigate similar crossroads. Our role isn't to provide fast answers. It's to ask better questions.
Our expectation? Work hard, treat your people well. Be relentlessly ambitious, but never at the expense of your integrity. Help other founders whenever you can. We believe startups become stronger when founders generously share what they've learned, even when there is nothing immediate to gain.
The founders who build enduring companies care deeply about understanding their customers, building exceptional products, creating healthy companies, and playing the long game.
If these ideas resonate with you, we think you'll enjoy building with us. We'd love to start a conversation.
